Naples and Pompeii

I finally got to go to Switzerland. The airport we flew out of straddles France and Switzerland and we flew out of the Swiss side. All our flights while in Europe are with Easy Jet> Easy Jet is similar to Southwest a few years back. First come first serve and no frills… maybe less frills, as you have to purchase a drink if you want one. Getting through the airport was a breeze for the two of us… obviously the only two Americans going through security while we were there… Everyone else was so confused but we zipped right through. Sooooo, we got through, got lined up but there was no plane….. Where could it be? It showed up a bit late, but it gets better. Easy Jet loads from the front and the back doors to speed the process. We thought this would allow us to make up for time, sadly something happened although I’m not sure what because I had my headphones on and I was asleep and we flew ALL over Switzerland almost an extra hour allowing us to be an hour late landing.  I obviously wasn’t too concerned since I slept through it but I will say the landing was VERY rough, so rough I thought we might actually bounce. When we finally disembarked I got to see my first of many different style toilets of Italy. I find different toilets to be very interesting. We finally got our luggage and off we went on the Alibus to find the train station to take us from Naples to Pompeii. Sadly, we missed the stop the first time and had to take a bit of a longer ride than expected… leading me to a very disappointing opinion of the city.

Yes my friends that's a trash pile in the middle of the street.

Posing at the wrong metro stop... 15 min. wait.

This was close to the port. Didn't have time to explore it.

Pompeii was amazing. I have all these amazing pictures but they do not do the area justice. I think the things that really surprised me the most were how big the city was and how modern it was. I guess I just didn’t expect things to be so amazing, but the ruins of the buildings, paintings and mosaics really impressed me.  My favorite room of all had the “sex” paintings. I don’t know what the archeologist are calling it but I’ve decided these sex position paintings over the tops of multiple small rooms with rock beds was a house of ill repute. Pretty interesting. We also came across a dog that we enjoyed exploring with and I gave water to. Dogs were always apart of the city of Pompeii and they’re asking for money to help keep the dogs healthy. We enjoyed this little ones company for quite awhile. Lastly, I finally saw two individuals that lost their life. I think the majority of the exhibit was actually in NYC while we were there but it was still creepy and sad seeing the individual’s bodies after they had died in such a horrific way. I think what really struck me about all of Pompeii was that with all these natural disasters occurring recently, something like that could happen again. I certainly hope that I don’t meet a death in that matter but I hope if I do, Jason and I can be holding hands and leave the world together and give future generations something to view.

The big stones were used so you could cross the street without getting dirty.  You can see that they were placed perfectly so the cards and things could still get through.

Our hotel was a dump. Not that I expected anything amazing, but the TV remote and air conditioner remotes had to be requested. Our AC did not work, our fan didn’t work, the TV was basically impossible the internet was slower than dial up and when we asked for help specifically with the AC the guy came in and said he didn’t know and whatever the words are for “it’s all good”. It was not all good… it was hot, and we had to sleep with the windows open. I like to think that I’m not a royal pain in the butt, however I do believe in decent air-conditioning after a full day of travel in a dirty city. Oh, Naples… what can I say except you did not live up to any of my ideas and that every negative stereo type I had about NYC (and wasn't true for NYC) is true about Naples…Dirty, trash everywhere, loud people, graffiti and generally ghetto. Please excuse my bluntness especially if you are from there or have family there… it just wasn’t what I expected.
