Preschool?!

Apparently it's been a year to the day since I blogged, and Kelso's teeth are doing much better.  I can't believe I haven't blogged even about Freya's birth but I guess that just means I've been busy living life and enjoying these crazy amazing moments. However tonight I'm pausing and taking a second to check in with my emotions. Tomorrow everything will change. Tomorrow Kelso will go to his first day of Preschool. To say I can't believe it is an understatement. My sweet little boy going to preschool; He has grown so much, taught me so much and made me a mommy. His smile and laugh are contagious. His curiosity for the world, inspiring. I don't want to share him. I don't want to be away from him for even second but I know it's time. He's ready to go out and play with kids his own age.  It's time for him to explore, hang upside down from the monkey bars and take turns. It's time for me to spend some one on one time with Freya. It's time for me to pack a tiny backpack with a change of clothes and a snack, 2 days a week.

I'm scared... but I'm not going to tell him that. I worry that they won't know what he needs and he won't ask. I'm scared the kids may be mean to him or that he won't understand that they are being mean.... I fear that someone will hurt him or he will hurt himself but worst of all is I know all those things will happen at one point or another. It's scary to love so fully and so unconditionally and know that you heart is running free in this world. I have to pray and believe that my boy will be safe, that the world is generally a good place and that god will protect my baby. That no matter what all I can do is provide the best care and best resources we have so that Kelso can live his life to the fullest. As much as I want to keep him home with me and away from the cruel world I do know that my little boy is dying to play with kids his own age. And while I've attempted to provide play groups, it's just not the same.... so here I am. I'm tearful with pride, fear and a little sadness praying over my boy as I have done since I knew of his existence. Praying as he's curled up snuggly with his daddy one last time before he's a preschooler that he will be safe, have fun and that I won't show my anxieties to him so he can have a "normal" and beautiful first day of school.

Say a little prayer...

My sweet baby boy is 2 and 4 months. He's had troubles with his teeth basically since they came in. We've done everything from natural remedies like pascalite clay to more traditional things like fluoride. We brush Kelso's teeth twice daily, we use xylitol after sweets and have been getting his teeth cleaned ever 6 months.

If you remember back to right around when he was 1, he had a weird tooth and we ended up having to fill it. My poor baby had to be put in a papoose board to get a filling… 3 months later he fell and broke said tooth (upper left lateral incisor)  off at the gum so we had it pulled to prevent even more  issues. It was again him being held down…. but it was quick.

Fast forward to this checkup/cleaning. I suspected one tooth had a cavity, he fell and chipped it, and although I was working hard to remineralize it it just didn't look right. Turns out Kelso has 4 cavities (all upper) with a 5th one beginning!!! I was in tears… how in the world can this be happening?! We are doing everything right… and yet in 6 months he has horrible cavities. The dentist questioned everything from diet to drinks to brushing and nothing makes sense. The suggestion was conscious sedation but they couldn't get us in until after our baby is born… there is no way I can imagine putting Kelso through that and going through it with a newborn while daddy is at band camp. After calling and talking to Dr. Hutton in-nausium about the medications he uses, his certifications and so on, I called our pediatrician for a recommendation, I wanted to get a second opinion and see if we could get him in quicker. Our pediatrician recommended two dentists, Dr. Ryan Cregger at Brentwood Pediatric Dentistry  and Dr. Buzz Alexander. We had actually gone to Dr. Cregger for a 3rd opining before we had to 1st filling done. I like him and his office staff but Kelso wasn't crazy about him. I decided to give Dr. Buzz a try and see if he was a good fit. They got us in quickly,  Kelso LOVED his office, office staff and even Dr. Buzz. I appreciated how nice everyone was, how less chaotic the waiting room was and how close his office is a hospital incase something goes wrong. So we decided to see if they could fix his cavities… lucky us they did have an appointment very quickly, THIS MONDAY.  They actually had an appointment the next day but I felt faint even thinking about going without daddy soo we took this monday appt.

I hated leaving Dr. Hutton's office because Kelso really liked him but we need this done quickly and I need a parent back there with him. Dr. Hutton had allowed it with the other procedures but said not during conscious sedation and I just don't like that. I feel like a parent should be present for such procedures. The only other major difference between Dr. Hutton's office and Dr. Buzz office is they use different sedation medications and Dr. Buzz said it may take 2 visits to complete all the fillings while Dr. Hutton said one.

So tomorrow is Monday and I'm a disaster. My poor pediatrician got another call to make sure he agreed with the medication Dr. Buzz was recommending, which he did. I however and still struggling,  I feel so bad that he has to go through this… I've been so proactive from the beginning because I wanted to avoid this drama for him. We don't even share drinks or utensils because cavities are passed that way. I can honestly say I would rather pull all my teeth than put my sweet baby through this… I know he won't be hurting but I'm scared something could go wrong with the medications. His appointment is a 8am tomorrow. We have to be there at 7:30 for medications and no food or drink after midnight the night before. If you have a second please say a prayer or send good vibes for all of us.

I stopped at Wal-mart on my way home from work today and bought a few toys so he can have a surprise after we're done. I imagine he will be really groggy, hungry and maybe sore from the dental work…. so having toys ready for quick access will be a bonus. I always got a toy after dentist appointments and drs appointments and I'm caring that materialism on… if not for anything but to ease my own guilt.

I know this isn't the last time my heart will ache for my baby and it isn't the first but wow is it powerful. Motherhood is not for the weak.

Dear Jason,

Sometimes I look back and can't believe how long we've been together and how much we've been through and I miss those days… but then I realize it was all those amazing things we did as youngsters made us the couple that we are today. A couple still in love, raising an amazing little boy and soon a little girl. We may not be able to travel like we did or even sleep the way we did before but we're exploring our own little world again through the eyes of a toddler which can be just as inspiring. I am looking forward to see what the next 10 years bring, challenges, successes and the love. I'm happy to be growing old with you.

Love you forever and a day,

Reagan

I have a 2 year old!!

I can't believe Kelso is 2!! Seriously where does the time go?! It amazes me to look at him and see how much he can do now. From that helpless little baby they handed me 2 years ago to this amazing little toddler who can do so much on his own and who can tell me what he wants and needs. This post is just an over view of Kelso right now. :)

Kelso LOVES airplanes, the airport, trucks and trains, laughing, going to church, playgroups,  swimming, Courage and of course his mommy and daddy.

He enjoys playing outside, riding his new Ybike, being pulled in his wagon, running, swinging, drawing with sidewalk chalk, taking bubble baths, jumping on his trampoline, playing trains, singing, vacuuming, playing music and playing with the tablet and my phone.  His favorite apps are Airplane!, Sparkabilities, talking ginger and fisher price.

His favorite TV shows are The Wiggles, Caillou, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Elmo and Curious George.

Kelso LOVES books, we read between 5-10 books a day, sometimes more. His favorite books include anything with Airplanes, 8 little ladybugs, Happy Birthday and Je Veux Grandir.

His favorite foods are - Waffles with butter, pizza, yogurt and pretty much any dessert, he regularly asks for cookies or cake. He still will not eat veggies unless they are pureed… if they are he enjoys squash and carrots the most.

Kelso's language has exploded, I don't think I can count all the words he knows at this point but he still prefers to talk with only me or daddy. However, he's starting to speak more when we are out and about. He counts to 10 pretty consistently and tries to count to 20. He also sings his ABC's with minimal issues.

As you can tell we're soo proud of our sweet little man. I cannot believe he's 2 and I cannot believe he'll have a little sister this year!!

20 weeks tomorrow

I cannot believe I'll be 20 weeks tomorrow! It's CRAZY to think we are 1/2 there. The time goes by even faster with number 2 than it did with the first. Not only does it move faster but it's been totally different. I know, I know, every pregnancy is different but it's surprising HOW different…

With this pregnancy I have had some serious morning sickness and fatigue. The kind of fatigue where you fall asleep at a stop light or lock yourself in the toddlers room and pass out while he crawls all over you. It's a strange sensation and nothing you can describe or really understand until you are there. As we moved from the first trimester to the second the sickness and fatigue has gotten better and a little easier. However, as those first trimester symptoms decrease some new symptoms begin showing up like shortness of breath, round ligament pain, inability to sleep and the fun and strange kicks and tumbles in my tummy. I'm also having a really hard time figuring out what I want to eat… as in take a bite and then don't want it anymore. I should also note that my belly has popped.

Along with the excitement of the 20th week is the wonder of gender… Are we having a boy or a girl? It's funny because I wasn't too curious until I was in FL, around week 18. The suspicion got the best of me so I started searching for quizzes and wives tales. The Chinese chart says Girl, the Amish test says girl and some of the wives tale say girl. However, almost everyone is guessing boy. I'm back and forth on the issue. I can see both fitting so perfectly in our family. While I was in FL, my bestie, Susan, and I had a girls day and we decided to go to a psychic. We looked and looked but kept coming up with psychics that couldn't get us in the same day and one that wanted to meet us in a hotel… "um yeah, no way". However, we did find one and we had a blast with her. She first predicted girl, then she described Kelso almost to a T except for his hair color and length and then said, no, you know maybe it is a boy… and she went back and forth and finally said, I have never had this much trouble seeing before. Then she looked at my palm and said you are due to have 2 boys and a girl… but the 3rd one won't be for awhile. I was shocked… I mean a 3rd has crossed my mind before but I'm still adjusting to the idea of 2. ;) As we walked out the door she said I'm going with boy and asked for me to call when we find out.

Sooo…we had our ultrasound on Monday. It went pretty well but poor Kelso is a mess anytime I lie down in a medical facility… so we pumped him full of M&Ms and let the tech get to work. She tried and tried but baby was not corporative with the measurements so we're going to have to go in for a second/followup ultrasound. That being said, she was able to tell us the gender as our wiggly baby danced around my belly. I've told a few people but we are planning on telling our church family on Sunday and celebrating Kelso's birthday. I'm not sure when we will be releasing our big news but I promise it won't be too much longer so stay tuned! :)

The big news is out

So our secret is out. We're having baby number 2! I've been resisting the urger to blog about this for months but now I finally can. :)

I have no rights to the audio. It is Jewel (Forever and a Day Always) and you can purchase it on iTunes. Two of the pictures were taken by the Andrea Rose Photography.

This baby was a surprise of sorts. We knew we wanted to have a baby in the future but the plan was not until Kelso was at least 2 before we would try, meaning he'd be 3 before baby would come along… However, as I'm learning these plans are not always in our hands and honestly I couldn't be happier or more terrified. So this baby is our 10th anniversary baby… One night with the calendar and counting thrown to the wind and here we are… we now have proven it really does only take one time.

Weeks before I could take a pregnancy test I started having symptoms so much so that one of my co-workers who is also a school nurse said "You need to take a pregnancy test". I literally knocked over a basin of water when she said it… the idea hadn't crossed my mind yet but as my symptoms conintued I started to wonder. The days went on and so did my symptoms, light headed, indigestion, bloating, hungry but nauseated…. Sounds so silly because it was so early but there it was Oct 29, I experienced the same exact implantation "spotting" really more like a spot. I came out of the bathroom and said, Jason I'm pretty sure we're pregnant… he just laughed. I decided to wait until Halloween to test because even though having a baby wasn't the plan at this moment after weeks of pondering I was pretty sure I'd be shocked if it was positive and disappointed if it was negative.  When I peed on the stick I set my clock on my phone just as I did with Kelso except this time I had a little guy in there to distract me… When the timer went off there was a faint line. I texted a pic to Jason that second trying to get it to him before school started. However he wasn't convinced… So I voxed Susan a picture of the "pink" early response test and she confirmed any line is a positive line but I needed more tests. So off to Wal-greens Kelso and I went, lots of pee and picture texts and we are both convinced.  I have to say he remained skeptical until he saw that digital test that actually said "pregnant". So take note ladies men prefer the actual words.

I'm so excited that our family is growing. I'm ecstatic about holding a beautiful baby in my arms. I can't wait to experience that feeling of my heart grown 20% its size the second I see our baby and the awe of every single second. I'm also super happy that Kelso will have a sibling to play with, learn with and enjoy. That being said I'm completely terrified, two babies?! Two kids under 3… really under 2.5. Ahhh… I mean I'm still nursing Kelso! I never even thought about tandem nursing. I'm still sleeping sharing with Kelso. What does that mean for baby #2? We're finally sleeping through to 5am most nights but it is still hours of work to get him to go to sleep. Beyond that how will Kelso feel about having a brother or sister? Will they be close? Will they hate each other? I almost feel sort of guilty, like I'm going to make him grow up faster because there will be another baby... The thoughts swirling around in my head are dizzying.

As time is going on I'm getting more and more comfortable with the idea of 2 as well as more excited. I'm so curious if we will be having a boy or a girl. It would be great to have a second boy because I always pictured 2 boys when I was younger, Kelso would have a playmate and we have just about everything we will need.. but a girl would be amazing too. As I have gotten older I've seen how awesome that mother daughter bond can be and I'd love to have that experience and I think we'd be great parents for a girl. It's strange because I know either way this child is going to be just the perfect fit for us. It just feels like he or she was picked just for our little family. Hopefully in about 3 weeks we'll know and we can start figuring out what we will name this sweet baby and start preparing.

It's going to be a beautiful ride! I'm so happy to be a mommy. Can't believe I'm going to be a mommy of two!

Occupational Therapy Burnout

Well I think I've hit that spot again… OT burnout. This is not some legendary thing, it's a very real issue that many therapist experience. My real concern is that I'm already experiencing it.

I know there are parts about OT that I love. I know there was and is a reason I went into this field. I know that I'm proud to say I am a OT. However, currently I am burned out. As a therapist I get to not only write evaluations and goals but I also get to make treatment plans and follow them as I see fit. However, the last few months I've been left a note telling me my treatment plan and ultimately that I'm going to be "bathing" 6-8 people a day. It is exhausting and not always appropriate… and truthfully I am sick of OT being represented as the shower givers… Part of the problem is the facility that I work in only has one community shower and once community tub and part of the problem is I'm pregnant and OVER IT. I honestly hardly have the energy to bathe myself at the end of the day… little less 8 people then myself and then my child. I want to make a difference in these peoples lives, I want to be selfless, and serve people, I want to send these people home stronger, more independent, happier and with them knowing and loving what OT is and stands for. However, the only thing they are getting to see is my ability to "give a bath". And let me just say, you have not lived until you've had to tell an elder that you are not going to wipe them, or wash them or whatever it is they are refusing to do until they have at least tried…

Here are some of my least favorite things I hear every single time I work.
"Are you giving me a shower today?"
"How many baths are you doing?"
"Wash in-between my toes"
"Wash my back."
"I can't wipe!"
"That's not how ____ does it."
"I just had therapy"
"I don't want therapy on Saturday or  Sunday,"
"Can you come back, I have visitors"
"I have to poop, it's going to be awhile."
"I can't do ____."
"I want to go home."
"Blow my hair dry."
"This is just play"

Here are the things that run through my mind
"Why don't I see any progress."
"This pt looks like death and you want me to work with them for an hour or more?!"
"How is ___ doing it, if it isn't the way I am?"
"Don't these people want to get better so they CAN go home?"
"I do not bathe your or give you baths, this is your time to work towards gaining your independence."
"I can't teach you or help you get better if you don't try"
"You do realize I'm charging and your insurance company by the minute to work with you"
"Every second I spend not with a patient/ waiting on your visitors leave, I am being penalized by productivity expectations."
"A little warning before you poop or if you don't know when you are going to poop would be GREAT."
"If you can't wipe here and aren't willing to try, what are you planning to do when you get home?"
"Why won't they just refuse therapy instead of wasting our time and making me come back 4 times a day to refuse at the end of the day."

Honestly, I think that sometimes our patients forget that therapist are people too and that our goals are aligned with theirs. We want what they want… we want them to go home, we want them to be pain free, we want them to be independent and yet somehow our means to reach these goals don't always match. Sadly it does take work, and the saying "use it or lose it" applies WAY more than many elderly will ever know.

One more work day this week for me, I can make it and hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
